TWO MEN SHOT
Affray Near Mortlake Charge Against Labourer
MORTLAKE Tuesday - A shooting affray occurred on the Mortlake-Hexham road, one mile from Mortlake, last night, when two young men, Colin John Clingan, aged 20 years, labourer, and Alexander James Toleman, aged 21 years, labourer, received bullet wounds in the body.
Clingan and Toleman were returning to Mortlake in a jinker at about 6.15 p.m. when they were passing a boxthorn hedge growing on the side of the road. It is al- leged that they were confronted by a young man armed with a pea rifle, and that several shots were fired. Toleman, who was driving, received a bullet wound in the left arm below the elbow, while a second shot pierced his clothing and grazed his stomach. Clingan received the third shot in the right shoulder.
The injured men drove to Mortlake, where they were treated at the Mortlake Hospital. Subsequently they were re- moved to Warrnambool Hospital.
Inquiries made by First-constable W.J. Cain led to the arrest of William Leslie Forbes aged 35 years, labourer, who was charged with shooting with intent to murder. Forbes appeared before Mr. H. Goodall, J.P., to-day, and was remanded to appear at Warrnambool on Monday next, when a further remand to Mortlake on July 29 will be sought. Bail was not allowed.
