Amazing Escapes In Air Crash; Pilots Dead
Melbourne. - The A.N.A. liner Kurana crash-landed on Mount Macedon, Victoria, at 7.55 a.m. today. The pilot and co-pilot were killed.
Nineteen passengers and the air hostess escaped with a severe shaking.
The plane, a 28-passenger DC3, was completely wrecked and burnt out.
The dead pilots are Captain H. Warlow-Davies (27), of Mosman, Sydney, and his first officer, J. Barry Keys (39), of Bondi.
Seven, passengers were taken to Melbourne by ambulance.
The plane was on the way from Essendon to Denilquiri when it crashed into a pines plantation near the mist-shrouded top of the mountain.
The Kurana had been called out from Essendon at 7.27 for a final fly. Eighteen minutes later it hit a mountain about 300 feet below the 3,324 feet summit.
Officials reported that most of the passengers had been taken to a guest house at the foot of the mountain.
PASSENGER LIST
Passengers were:
For NARRANDERA: Mr. K. Gor- don, Mr. B. Walton, Mrs. J. Cherry. Miss C. Dobbie, Mr. G. Osborne.
For GRIFFITH: Mrs. M. Lynch, Mr. L. P. McWilliam.
For DENILIQUIN: Mrs. L. J. Woods, Mr. H. Armstrong, Mr. and Mrs. R. K. McLaurin, Mr. J. Huntly, Mr. M. Hill, Mr. J. Mather, Mr. F. Fitzmaurice. Mr. and Mrs. S. Reid (of Adelaide).
The air hostess was Miss Elizabeth Charlotte Fry (24), of Melbourne.
Nine seats in the plane were empty.
Local residents said that the aircraft flew in a direct line towards the mountain in low cloud and rain. It skidded for several hundred yards "across the pine trees, cutting off the tops as it went. This apparently broke its fall.
It then reached the firebreak. It swerved round and dropped 50 feet to the ground right side up.
The nose was smashed in and the aircraft began to burn.
PASSENGER S STORY
Mr. J. McWilliam, of Griffith, gave this account of the accident: "We skidded .for some hundreds of yards along the tops of trees and then dived into the mountain Some of us had safety belts on and some did not. The seats just tore themselves away and we crashed forward.
"One woman had her leg caught in one of the seats and was injured. We all scrambled to get out. About 11 went out through the doors and others through the windows. The plane was burning and some had their hair scorched as they got out.
"The air hostess took charge of the situation. She was marvellous. With two other men I climbed into the cabin to pull out the pilot and co-pilot. The nose was all smashed, and it was obvious that the pilot was done.
"There was no panic," the hostess kept everybody calm. She laid the injured woman on the grass, bandaged her head, and put her leg in splints. She made an injured man comfortable and the co-pilot," said Mr. Mcwilliams.
A civil aviation official that the plane left Essendon in the ordinary way. No message was received from it after its departure message.
Mrs. John Bevan (25), of Mount Macedon, said she first heard the plane go over, while she was lying in bed at 7.15. The engine did not sound right and.it seemed that one was "missing." Then she heard a series of four crashes, one after another, and explosions.
She immediately drove up the mountain towards the accident and met some of the passengers coming down the hill. Some of them had scratches on their faces and bleeding noses.
Police and A.N. A. officials later took charge, and the injured were taken to Kyneton Hospital.
The first passenger from the crashed plane to arrive at Royal Melbourne Hospital was Mr. B. Walton, of Brigades Station, New South Wales. He said he had been reading the paper and heard someone behind him say, "It's going." The engines were cut off and the next thing the plane crashed.
The pilot set the plane on its tail and crashed it into pine trees, doing a terrific job. At 10 a.m. the aircraft was still burning.
The main shell was completely burnt out and all that remained were the remnants of the two wings, shattered engine, and twisted tailpiece.
IN HOSPITAL
Four passngers were admitted to the Melbourne Hospital. They were:-
Norman Hall (51) Coolamon, N.S.W.: Multiple bruises and lacerations.
Brial Walton (22). Bungaree Station, Carathool, N.S.W.: Bruises and abrasions.
Mrs. Lynch (56). Ardlethan. N.S.W.: Lacerated lips and concussion.
Marion Hill (34), Studley Park Road, Kew: Bruises to the leg.
Other people injured were:-
William Cassidy (33), Armstrong Street, Thornbury, Victoria: Lacrated hand and bruised back.
George Osborne (20). Tarcutta: Injuries to ankle and ribs.
John Mcwilliams (54), Griffith. N.S.W.: Lacerated hand and bruised ribs.

Plane Crashed Miles Off Course
MELBOURNE, Monday.-The Australian National Airways D.C.3 Airliner, Kurana, was more than seven miles off its route when it crashed into Mount Macedon near Melbourne early this morning.
The Kurana broke its back when it hit the ground and the pilots' cabin was wrecked.
The pilot, Captain H. Warlow-Davies, 27, of Central Avenue, Beauty Point, was killed instantly, and his co-pilot, First
Officer J. Barrington Keys, 38, of Bondi, died of injuries without regaining consciousness.
The 19 passengers and the air hostess, Miss Elizabeth Charlotte Fry, 24, of Queen's Road, Melbourne, were injured.
Civil Aviation Department officials said tonight that they had instructed the Kurana to fly at 3,000 feet, almost the exact height of the spot where it crashed into the mountain.
As the last passenger was being helped out, the plane burst into flames.
CAUSE UNKNOWN
Members of the Air Accident Investigation Squad of the Department of Civil Aviation who were at the scene of the crash, said it was "impossible to say what had happened."
A department spokesman said that early reports indicated that the beam route to Deniliquin lay seven or eight miles to the east of Mount Macedon.
He said that there was no possibility of icing at the altitude at which the Kurana was apparently flying.
At Essendon control tower, a police telephone call informed the officials that the Kurana had crashed.
The officials said that they did not expect the Kurana to report back until she made contact with Mangalore emergency airfield, about 80 miles north-west of Macedon.
HIT TREES
The Kurana left Essendon at 7.27 a.m. for Deniliquin, Narrandera, Wagga, and Sydney.
Just 13 minutes later it crashed in a thick pine forest, about 300 feet below the summit of the mountain, lt sheared off the tops of trees for almost 100 yards before the thick stem of an-80ft pine struck between an engine nacelle and thc cock-pit.
The impact uprooted the pine tree and the plane, jammed on the tree top, fell with it, swinging round but miraculously remaining upright.
Passengers' seats buckled with the impact. The lights went out.
The air hostess, Miss Fry, calmly called to passengers: "Keep your seats, please. Go out quietly, please."
She fought with the buckled rear door and finally opened it.
Three passengers, Mr. Mcwilliam, Mr. McLaurin, and Mr. Mather, tore away the frame work of the cockpit in an effort
to save the pilots.
They pulled them clear, but Captain Davies was dead.
Outside, Miss Fry counted the passengers. When she had made certain that ho one was still in the blazing wreckage, she asked a passenger, Mr. Adam Armstrong, of Griffiht, N.S.W., Armstrong, to find a telephone and ring A.N.A.
Mr. Mc William said: "We skidded over tree tops for about 100 yards and then dived into the ground. Some of us still had our belts done up and some didn't.
"The seats buckled themselves underneath us and tore away.
"The plane was already burning when the last of us got out. Some had their hair singed.
"Miss Fry took charge. She was marvellous.
"We got the two men out of the nose and laid them on the ground. It was obvious the pilot was done."
A Kyneton ambulance rushed three of the injured to Kyneton Hospital. The rest were taken to Melbourne.
In Macedon, the local bus proprietor, Mr. Tom Garner, heard the crash and, while his wife 'phoned the police, he picked up Forestry Commission men and drove to the plane.
A few minutes later a telephone call brought Dr. A. E. Lincoln, of Woodend, racing to the scene. He said later: "The
plane was a burnt-out shell when I got there.
"I gave morphia to the badly injured and made them comfortable until the ambulance arrived.
"The passengers told me that they owed their lives to Miss Fry. I am convinced that is true."

AIR HOSTESS HEROINE OF
MOUNTAIN CRASH
Impact Kills Pilots But 20 Escape Fire
MELBOURNE, November 8.-The calm confid- ence of an air hostess was instrumental in saving 20 lives when the A.N.A. airliner Kurana crashed on Mount Macedon early to-day on a flight from Mel bourne to Sydney. The machine, it is stated, was more than five miles off its route when it crashed. The pilot, Captain H. Warlow-Davies (28), of Mosman, Sydney, was killed instantly, and his co-pilot, First Officer J. Barrington Keys (38), of Bondi, died of injuries without regaining consciousness. Civil Aviation Department officials revealed to-night that the Kurana naa been instructed to fly at 3000 feet, almost the exact height of the spot where it crashed into the mountain.
"That the majority of the pas- sengers did not perish in the flames was due to the cool-headedness of the air hostess. Miss Fry," said Dr. A. E. Lincoln, of Woodend, who was among the first at the scene of the crash. Residents of Upper Macedon, five miles away, distinctly heard the crash. "This crash should be known as the miracle of Macedon," said T. Shellard. "Only a miracle saved the 20 who got out alive." Three of the passengers who ap- peared to be seriously injured were taken to Kyneton District Hospital. Two of them, Mrs. J. Cherry, of Bargowlata, Sydney, and Keith Gordon, of Narrendera, N.S.W., were still on the serious list late to-night. The Kurana left Essendon for Sydney, via Deniliquin, Narren- dara and Wagga, at 7.27 a.m. under instructions from Flight Control to fly at 3000 feet

A.N.A. AIRLINER CRASHES ON MT. MACEDON
Passengers Safe But Pilots Die
MELBOURNE.-The A.N.A. DC3 air liner Kurana crashed on Mount Macedon, 43 miles from Melbourne, at 7.45 a,.m yesterday. The pilot and first officer were killed but the air hostess and 19 passengers managed to scramble out before the plane burst into flames.
HOSTESS of the Kurana, Miss Elizabeth Fry, shows evidence of her ordeal on arrival in Melbourne.
TRIBUTE TO HOSTESS MELBOURNE. - "The air hostess was marvellous," said a passenger after the Kurana crash yesterday.
The hostess was Miss Elizabeth Charlotte Fry (24), of Queen's Rd., Melbourne. "Miss Fry took charge of the situation," said the passenger Mr. J. McWilliam, of Griffith N.S.W.
"The nose was smashed in, and it was obvious that the pilot was done," he added. "There was no panic. and Miss Fry kept every one calm."
The pilot did a "terrific" job, according to another passenger, Mr. B. Walton, of Brigadee Station, N.S.W.
He stood the plane on its tail, and cushioned it into the pine trees.
The pilot, Capt. H. Warlow Davies, was the younger son of Mr. H. Warlow-Davies, of Hobart, and the late Mrs. Warlow Davies. He was educated at Clemes College and Hutchins School, Hobart.
Capt. Warlow-Davies had a record of 5000 hours with A.N.A., Which he joined in 1944 after war service with the R.A.A.F.
First Officer J. Keys also was Married. He had flown 4000 hours with A.N.A.
FOUR of the passengers were taken to hospital.
The Kurana, which was en route from Essendon to Deniliquin, N.S.W., crashed about 300 ft. below the summit of the 3324ft. mountain 18 minutes after it had taken off from Essendon.
Officials at Essendon said no message was received from the plane after its departure.
A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Department said the Kurana was eight miles off its course when it crashed.
Instead of flying on the beam from Essendon to Mangalore, near Seymour, the plane had been west of due north.
The Kurana, which was licensed in August, 1937, is be lieved to have been one of A.N.A.'s oldest aircraft.
This is the third A.N.A. crash within ten weeks.
The pilot, Captain H. Warlow-Davies (27), of Mosman, Sydney, died near the scene of the crash, and his first officer, J. (Barry) Keys (38), of Bondi, died later in the Kyneton Hospital.
Slid on Trees
The plane was apparently trying to make a forced landing when it struck the mist-shrouded mountain.
Eye-witnesses said the plane slid for several hundred yards after it struck the pine trees, cutting off the tops as it went.
It then reached a fire break, slewed round and dropped 50ft. to the ground. Pieces of the tail and wing which had been ripped off were later found hundreds of yards away. A passenger, Mr. J. McWilliam. of Griffith, N.S.W., said that when the plane hit the ground and started to burn, the passengers scrambled to get out. About 14 of the passengers managed to scramble through the door and the others through the windows. Extricated Pilots Three of the passengers - Messrs. J. McWilliam, R. McLaurin and J. Mather went back into the plane and extricated the mortally injured pilots from the cockpit before the Kurana was destroyed by fire.
Mr. B. Walton, of Brigadee Station, N.S.W., after treatment at Royal Melbourne Hospital for bruises and abrasions, said he was reading a paper when someone behind him said, "It's going.' The engines were cut off and the plane crashed.
Mr. Walton said he smashed a window beside him, got out and then helped three other people behind him.
The plane burst into flames about a minute later.

Mrs. Mary Lynch, 56, Ardlethan, lacerated lip and concussion.
Marion Hill, 34, Kew (vic.), bruises to leg.
William Cassidy, 33, Thornbury (Vic.), lacerated hand and back.
George Osborne, 30, Tarcutta, injuries to ankle and ribs.
John McWilliams, 54, Griffith, lacerated hand and bruised ribs.
Passengers booked for Griffith were Messrs. L. J, Woods, H. Armstrong, J. Huntly, J. Mather, F. Fitzmaurice, Mr. and Mrs. Reid; for Deniliquin, Mr. and Mrs. R. K. McLaurin.
Mrs. J. Sherry, Ogilvie Road, Balgowiah, burns and abrasions fractured right leg and shock.
Miss C. Cobbie, sister of Mrs. Sherry, Grand Hotel, Newcastle, abrasions and shock.
Keith Gordon, Frank Street, Narrandera, shock and fractured spine.
Plane Icing Badly
The plane left Essendon at 7.27 a.m. on a flight to Deniliquin, Griffith, Narrandera, Wagga, and Sydney.
A radio operator on another plane heard the pilot ask for permission to descend from 11,000
to 7,000 feet as his plane was, icing badly. The request was repeated, and a few minutes later the pilot radioed he was going down to 7,000 feet.
Shortly after Essendon control put the emergency procedure into operation, and the Douglas was called repeatedly, but no reply was received.
Crashed in Plantation
The plane crashed in a pine plantation at the rear of a property owned by Mr, George Nicholas, near the top of the mountain.
Passengers and eye-witnesses described how the plane skidded across the, tops of pine trees, slashing off the tops, and then slewed and dropped 50-feet into a fire break.
Pieces of the wing and tail-plane were ripped off as the plane slashed through the trees, and were found hundreds of yards away from the wreckage.
Plane Burst Into Flames.
The plane started to burn when it hit the ground, and passengers described how they scrambled from the wreckage under the leadership of the air hostess, Miss Elizabeth Fry.
Some passengers had their hair singed in escaping.
Mr. Mather, of Moorabin, and Mr. McLaurin, of Deniliquin, lacerated their hands in dragging the pilot and co-pilot from the wrecked cabin of the plane.
When news of the crash reached Melbourne about 8.a.m. two ambulances and an A.N.A. passenger bus were rushed to Mt. Macedon.
Royal Melbourne Hospital made preparations to receive the injured.
Tribute to Air Hostess
Mr. Brian Walton, of Clarathool, one of the passengers, paid tribute to the work done by the hostess after the crash.
Only the marvellous efforts, of the pilot saved the passengers from probable death, he said. The pilot cushioned the plane and brought it down with the greatest accuracy.
The plane was totally destroyed by fire after the passengers escaped and the pilot and co-pilot were dragged free.
The Acting Director of Air Navigation and Safety (Mr. J. Harper) and Acting Chief, inspector of Air Accidents (Mr. Alan Lum) went to the scene of the crash immediately news was received.
Captain Warlow-Davles, 27, was a fighter pilot in the R.A.A.F. He has been with the A.N.A. since 1944, and had over 5,000 flying hours. He is survived by a widow and a three weeks old daughter.
First Officer Keys was 38, and had 4,000 flying hours. He leaves a widow and a three-year-old daughter.
The air Hostess, Miss Fry, is 24, and lives in Queen's Road, Melbourne.
Civil aviation authorities, who investigated the wreck said that the escape of the air hostess and 19 passengers was one of the most miraculous in Australian aviation history.
They said the pilot had apparently tried, to pancake the plane after engine trouble developed. The plane skidded over the tops of the trees and then smashed into a 100 foot high pine. This impact smashed the cabin killing the pilot and fatally injuring the co-pilot, they believe.
The plane was smouldering as passengers escaped from the wreck and exploded a few minutes later when, leaking petrol caught fire.
Passengers said the air hostess was marvellous, disregarding her own danger and injuries to care for the passengers.
Miss Fry suffered abrasions to the face.
